Understanding The Truth About Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has long been the point of interest for scientists all over the world. What scientists already knew about the plant from ancient records has been confirmed, in fact a number of new facts have been added to these records. As a result, we know Aloe Vera as a wonder in the field of medical science. Here are some other useful things about the plant from the viewpoint of modern science.

Understanding the Specie

Aloe Vera as a specie is well-known by a number of aliases. For instance, some of the popular synonyms for the specie are:

  • A. barbadensis Mill.
  • Aloe indica Royle
  • Aloe perfoliata L. var. vera
  • A. vulgaris Lam.

Apart from the scientific terms mentioned above, there are few common names of Aloe Vera, including:

  • Indian Aloe
  • Chinese Aloe
  • True Aloe (In fact, the word Vera translates to ‘true’)
  • Plant of immortality
  • Fountain of youth
  • Barbados Aloe and so on.

In the year 1768, Nicolaas Laurens Burman described the specie as Aloe Vera in his work Flora Indica.

Requirements for Cultivation

Aloe Vera is grown in the regions having warm tropical type of climate. Freezing temperatures are not the ideal conditions for the growth of this plant. Sandy and loamy soil is the best for Aloe Vera to grow, though it can be grown on all types of soils. The plants obtain yellow flowers in the time period of one year. The leaves are 1-2 feet long and can be harvested as many as 4 times in a year. Aloe Vera, due to its thick leaves, can restore huge quantity of water and can even survive in drought conditions.

Preparing Aloe Vera for Use

Aloe Vera can be prepared for use in various medical fields by following two useful techniques:

  • Whole leaf process involves chopping down of Aloe Vera leaves and preparing the pulp out of them. Different filters are then used to filter the Aloe Vera pulp. It is an inefficient process, as other impurities have high probability to get filtered, making the final product impure. Heat and cold processing can be applied to remove impurities, still the final product is not so useful.
  • Filleting is the second and more appropriate process of preparing Aloe Vera. It can be applied with hand or using a specialized machine. The process involves obtaining the most valuable part of the Aloe Vera leaves. While hand filleting produces better quality product, less in volume, machine filleting can produce more amount of Aloe Vera that lacks in quality.

Certification of Aloe Vera

The International Aloe Science Council (IASC) is responsible for setting up the standards for Aloe Vera production and use in medicines. It certifies the raw material as well as the finished products to ensure desired quality Aloe Vera at the end.

Modern science has introduced the world to various aspects of Aloe Vera and the world of medicines is constantly making attempts to use this information in a productive manner to make this wonder of nature a universal health remedy.
